Madam C.J. Walker set the standard of the ideal female entrepreneur. She was a highly successful entrepreneur, widely considered to be the first African-American female millionaire. Walker was known and respected not only for her business acumen but for her inspirational political and social advocacy and her philanthropy. As the daughter of former slaves, Walker worked initially as a washerwoman until she devised a hair care and grooming system to meet the needs of African-American women in 1905. The Madam C.J. Walker Business Achievement Award is intended to recognize exceptional women of color and their business achievements in the spirit of Madam C.J. Walker.

In 1982, she became the first Afro-American female graduate from the College of Engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Valarie quickly rose through the ranks gaining international executive experience and industry recognition with leading organizations such as Abbott Laboratories, Intergraph Corporation, EMC/Documentum and U.S. Steel which led her to the pinnacle of her career as CEO of OnShore Technology Group. Upon acceptance of the honor as a finalist, Valarie commented, "I am deeply honored and humbled to be considered as a finalist for this great honor. Madam C.J. Walker is the standard-bearer for all women of color. The greatest joy was being their with her great-great granddaughter A’Lelia Bundles and shaking hands with history", said Valarie.
